"How Plants Make Their Own Food"

Plants are amazing living things because they can make their own food. Unlike humans and animals, plants do not depend on others for food. They use sunlight, water, and air to prepare their food through a process called photosynthesis.

What is Photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants make food in their leaves using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide. The food produced is called glucose, which gives energy to the plant for growth and survival.

Plants follow these steps to make their food :

  • Roots absorb water from the soil
  •  Leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores called stomata
  •  Chlorophyll (green pigment in leaves) traps sunlight energy
  •  Using sunlight energy, plants convert water and carbon dioxide into food (glucose)
  •  Oxygen is released into the air as a by-product

Equation of Photosynthesis

6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Light Energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂

This means carbon dioxide and water, in the presence of sunlight, produce glucose and oxygen.

Photosynthesis is very important for life on Earth because:

  •  It produces oxygen for humans and animals to breathe
  • It provides food for all living organisms indirectly
  •  It helps maintain balance in nature
  • It supports the entire food chain

CONCLUSION: Plants are called “producers” because they create their own food. The process of photosynthesis is essential for life on Earth. Without it, there would be no oxygen, no food, and no life.
